Land and Measured Building Surveyor – Midlands 

Professional, ambitious, and self-motivated individuals required to join our team as we look to grow our service offering. 

Malcolm Hughes is one of the leading survey companies in the UK. We operate from offices around the UK and offer our clients genuine nationwide coverage. 

Suitable candidates should have at least 3-5 years’ experience working as a Land Surveyor with a strong understanding of the technical requirements of the role and a robust work ethic.  

In addition, the following attributes are essential: 

  • Working knowledge and able to demonstrate correct use of Total Station, Laser Scanners and GNSS.  
  • Experience in taking projects from ‘field to finish’ liaising with clients on requirements/specification and providing professional advice. 
  • Proficient in the creation of technical survey reports.  
  • Experience of working with teams of less experienced surveyors, adopting a coaching and mentoring style.  
  • Effective communication skills. 
  • Able to work well and contribute as part of a team. 
  • Ability to use your initiative, problem solve and work to deadlines. 
  • Good time keeping. 
  • Flexibility to work away from home for periods and accommodate various shift patterns when required (such as night shift etc). 
  • A committed attitude and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced industry. 
  • A full UK driving licence.

Trainee Utility Mapping Surveyor

Enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals required to work alongside an experienced utility mapping surveyor based in Central Scotland operating from our Glasgow office. The role would involve assisting the surveyor with tracing and recording buried utilities at sites throughout Scotland and beyond, developing skills that enable progression to utility surveyor.

Your training would include:

  • Training in all utility survey techniques, EML/GPR etc
  • Training using Total Stations and GNSS
  • Formal qualifications (QCF Level 3 qualification in underground utility mapping)
  • Gaining experience at working on various types of sites, from congested city centres to isolated rural locations.
  • Liaising with clients and staff at all levels within the business.

The successful candidate will be someone that is self-motivated, has excellent communication skills, and can work well as part of a team.

Ideally as a candidate you should have the following:

  • A committed attitude and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced industry.
  • Ability to use your initiative, problem solve and work to deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills and good time keeping.
  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Experience in analysing technical drawings and abstracting required information.

We are looking for an Apprentice Geospatial Surveyor Assistant to join our team.

Desired skills

  • Good organisational skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good basic mathematical skills, in particular geometry and trigonometry
  • Good basic IT skills: CAD skills would be useful

  • Self-motivation and enthusiasm
  • Good time keeping and flexibility
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Willingness to travel and stay away from home
  • An interest in maps and mapping would be helpful

Desired qualifications

5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) including maths and English.

Future prospects

A successful apprentice who shows the right attitude and aptitude for the work will quickly gain promotion to junior surveyor, with responsibility for their own work. Salary advancement can be rapid for a capable surveyor with a ‘can do’ attitude, with a choice of company vehicle provided.

Things to consider

A driving licence is essential (due to travelling within the role).
